The First Open House

library staffOn April 20th, 1996, the Surrey Stake Center building held an open house. All the various organizations had displays throughout the building to allow everyone coming in through the doors to see what we were all about. Going through our Family History Centre which is now called the Family Search Center was part of the tour. Everyone got to see what we had and what was available. Many of the librarians as they were called then, had been working to set the centre up since the previous fall. Many had donated pedigree charts, books, family histories, maps for the displays. Many patrons were very excited about having a centre so close as they had been driving to Burnaby to get to the nearest one. The tours were such a success that they continued long after the 8:30 closing.
After the centre officially opened it’s doors on April 23rd, they started holding monthly patron seminars, a practice which we continue today.
